Clutch Disc Introduction
What's Clutch Disc ?
The clutch disc is a key component of the vehicle clutch system, installed between the engine and transmission. It transmits engine power to the gearbox through friction, enabling smooth starting, gear shifting, and power interruption during driving.
Clutch System Constructions.
The clutch system is mainly composed of the following key parts:
- Clutch Disc (Clutch Plate)
Friction surface, transmits engine power to the transmission.
- Clutch Cover (Pressure Plate Assembly)
Provides clamping force to press the clutch disc.
- Release Shaft/Release Bearing(Throwout Bearing)
Pushes the pressure plate to disengage the clutch.
- Clutch Fork
Lever that moves the release bearing.
- Flywheel
Mounted on the engine crankshaft; friction surface for the clutch disc.
- Master Cylinder & Slave Cylinder (Hydraulic type)
Control clutch operation hydraulically.
- Diaphragm spring
This moves the pressure plate inside the clutch cover.
- Pressure Plate
This presses the clutch disc against the flywheel to transmit the engine's power.
How the Clutch Works?

Clutch Disengagement
When the clutch pedal is depressed, it moves the release bearing forward to apply force on the diaphragm spring. This action lowers the clamping force on the clutch disc, causing it to disengage from the flywheel. As a result, the connection between the engine and the transmission is interrupted.

Clutch Engagement
When the clutch pedal is released, the diaphragm spring returns to its original position and reapplies pressure to the clutch disc. This reconnects the clutch disc with the flywheel, enabling power to be transmitted from the engine to the transmission and driving the vehicle forward.

Clutch Disc Functions.
- Torque Transmission
When the clutch pedal is released, the clutch disc is firmly pressed against the flywheel by the pressure plate. Using friction material on its surface, it transfers the engine's rotational power to the transmission input shaft.
- Power Disconnection
When the pedal is depressed, the pressure plate lifts and the clutch disc disengages. The engine can then rotate freely without driving the wheels, allowing smooth gear shifting or stopping without stalling.
- Shock Absorption & Vibration Damping
The center of the clutch disc is usually equipped with torsional damping springs, which absorb shocks caused by engine torque fluctuations and reduce vibration in the drive system for smoother starting and shifting.
- Overload Protection
Under extreme load or emergency braking, the clutch disc can slip slightly to prevent instantaneous high torque from damaging the transmission gears.
