A lot of fleet operators tell us, "The belt looks fine, there are no cracks on it." That used to be a reliable tell on older rubber compounds, but modern EPDM belts don't crack like that anymore. What actually happens is the V-rib profile wears thinner over millions of rotations. Eventually, the ribs drop all the way down and touch the metal valley of the pulley grooves. Once the wedge contact on the side walls disappears, the belt slips under load no matter how hard you torque the adjuster bolt.

Another thing to watch out for before slipping the new belt on: look straight down the belt line at the alternator pulley. On trucks that have had messy roadside repairs, that lower alternator bracket ear often gets slightly warped. If it's tilted even one or two millimeters forward, the belt tracks cocked and shaves the cord right off the outer rib within weeks.

Give the fan hub and the idler bearing a quick spin by hand while the belt is off. If you feel any gravelly notchiness or wobble, sort that bearing out immediately, otherwise the vibration will just fatigue the new belt's tension cords.
